For the past decade, the oil and gas industry has been preparing for the “great crew change.” Well, for those of you unaware, if you’re still waiting or preparing, you missed it. The new crew are on duty, and whether you like it or not, it’s not going to change.
In the past five years, our industry has lost more experience than we have time to replace. The “new normal,” and we need to do “more with less,” are not only leading every commercial conversation, but companies like #Google are now in O&G, which will not only disrupt the industry, but change the world.
Global warming went from 0-60 in 20 years, and 60-100 in 60 seconds. #Bigoil has been replaced with #bigdata, and the now #climatedisaster has only one solution, and its not what’s buried below, but what’s buried in the massive gaps from spud to tank. From the #lastmile, to the last drop, fossil fuels are far from being replaced; and in fact, will fund the #climatecure. No other economic engine has the runway, or girth.
The #newcrew consists of a generation accustomed to having a world of information at their fingertips. While some may recognize characteristics that give credence to labels, I’ve found that perception and reciprocity are close cousins. For every “entitled,” “self-absorbed narcissist” you meet, turn around, and you’ll find an eager, adaptive and curious team player with an interest in making a difference for every dollar they put in a #401k.
Every generation sees its successor as apocalyptic. I find that to be both arrogant, and hypocritical, but also soothing to my own ego; I too want to be recognized and valuable. How silly of me; insecure after all these years. 😊
As we enter 2020, let it be known, that human beings have for as many years as we have an understanding of time, evolved. The next decade, century, and millennium will be no different, with exception to the speed at which that evolution occurs.
Moral of the story. I’m leaning into millennials, while holding onto the timeless values of hard work, respect, resilience, and the knowledge that people are Earth’s greatest asset and threat. What we see is how we hold the mirror.
